Here is my non-spoiler review of KLAP!! ~Kind Love And Punish~. The only graphics I’ll show are the title screen, screenshots of the interface, and non-spoiler dialogue and CGs.
After graduating university, our heroine Yamashiro Koyomi has been applying for teaching jobs but isn’t having any success. That is till she receives one successful application notice from a school she doesn’t recall applying to. Determined to pursue her dream though, she accepts the offer. However, she discovers that the school is a disciplinary one for UMA (youkai), which is hidden from the public eye in the 48th prefecture of Japan. While she is hesitant to take on the role of a disciplinary teacher, the principal, Nurarihyon (CV: Kobayashi Norio), promises to recommend her to a regular school if she does her job well for 1 year. Koyomi agrees, and so besides her teaching duties, she also has to train her students if they go out of control.
Her students include tengu Mimasaka Toma (CV: Morikubo Shoutarou), yuki-onna Suo Sosuke (CV: Kaji Yuuki), kappa Suruga Akito (CV: Tachibana Shinnosuke), vampire Camil=Settselin (CV: Kimura Ryouhei), nekomata Harima Kanade (CV: Okamoto Nobuhiko), wolfboy Omi Ryo (CV: Kakihara Tetsuya), and mermaid Ishimi Kaede (CV: Igarashi Hiromi). Izumo Shion (CV: Sugita Tomokazu) is her fellow colleague, and Hyuga Shinobu (CV: Yasumoto Hiroki) is the school doctor.
This is a really straightforward otome game, and the story isn’t all that complex. Thus I think that it’s fine to play in any order – just keep in mind that Shion’s route is only unlocked after your first playthrough. If I were to suggest an order, I would say that the story gets “heavier” in this order: Toma, Akito, Camil, Sosuke, Kanade, Shion.
There is a common route of 5 chapters, and then 3 chapters when it branches into the individual character route. In the common route, Koyomi basically gets closer to the guy. Once you branch into the individual character route, it will focus on each guy’s issue or story. Like I said, the story isn’t complex or deep. Well, one may argue that the story gets heavy in Sosuke, Kanade or Shion’s route. However, it really isn’t when compared to say – Kami naru Kimi to. So personally it wasn’t heavy-going or draggy, so it was easy for me to finish the whole thing under a week. And that’s considering that I only have a few hours to play at night – or more hours over the weekend.
I liked all of the characters, and the interactions are fun to watch. It was also nice to see that the other characters will still appear later on, instead of disappearing off the screen. Personally, my favourite characters are Camil and Kanade. Camil was so hilarious since his train of thought is always off-track and random. He’s also into gaming so he often makes references to that. Kanade was cute because despite his appearance, he is the oldest among everyone and his mannerism and personality reflects that. But like I said, all of the characters are very likeable – even the supporting characters. Koyomi herself was a decent heroine, and it was also nice to have a heroine in a position of authority.
The romance can develop rather suddenly though. However, I already expected this to be a light-hearted and fun playthrough, so I didn’t have any high expectations. It was a bit inconsistent in that Koyomi would be bothered by their teacher-student positions in some routes – whereas it didn’t bother her in other routes.
It’s easy to raise the guy’s affection to get the good end. And yes, you are not forced to play bad ends (to get the platinum trophy)! As for the S or M choices, it only affects how the guy responds during the 調教 session. Take note that S = the guy will respond with S lines, and vice versa.
As for 調教, it’s also easy to get a rank A. Basically, you get a higher score if you score with less hits. All the guys have a different weak point, so just aim there at the right timing. To be honest though, I didn’t do that and just hit all the spots in order to hear their different reactions haha. At the end, you also need to calm them down by literally rubbing them. /ahem
You can choose to skip 調教 but you will end up with rank C. I never did skip it though, because I find it so fun haha. You will unlock more items to hit them with as you progress through their route, so I will always want to try it out.
Generally, the art was nice. There were a few awkward ones and I notice that it tends to focus on the guy (instead of including Koyomi). Personally, my favourites were the 調教 CGs haha. As for the background art, I liked the UMA influences. The music was okay, and I did like the opening and ending songs (sung by Morikubo and Kaji).
The cast is filled with big names. But I know you must be curious about how they were during 調教. Let me just say that Tachibana and Kimura sounded…the most experienced hahaha. I mentioned that Camil’s character was hilarious, and that applies during 調教 too. While you can hear the…panting in the background, his character would say stuff like “Don’t touch me” or “Doki doki” when you hit him. The stark difference made it funnier for me.
You can unlocks CGs, CG scene replays, music, opening/ending movie videos, character profiles, and 調教. Yes, you are free to 調教 the guys as much as you want – you can even choose for them to respond with S or M lines. You also unlock a bonus scenario, which you can access from the gallery section. I was confused at first, but all you need to do is click the last empty box to access it. The scenario is basically the guy getting jealous, so their character is acting more along the lines of S. I kind of wished that you get another scenario to have them act more M.
As for the platinum trophy, there should be no problem achieving it. I remember that you just need to choose another choice in one of Akito’s choices to get another CG variation. That’s about it.
Overall, I recommend KLAP!! ~Kind Love And Punish~ if you’re in the mood for an easy-going and fun otome game. The best part is that you can de-stress during the 調教 sessions to your heart’s content!
