English Translation

A palace burning in the flames of war, the winds of early spring grow a little warmer
The willow green after signals set off smokes of gunpowder, a person stands on the walls of the city
His mask appears sad yet happy, between crying and smiling he gazes at me
If neither the living nor the dead are at fault, then surely it is my fault

Blazing brightly like a thousand lanterns, faintly like a will-o’-the-wisp, for a thousand miles this corpse has never faded away
I hear an elegy, and also see a sunset like the blood staining a white flag [1]

Deep at night in a battlefield without a soul in sight
Broken swords, rivers of blood, fierce winds and moonlight
A gentle light shines on the bones of a youth, like a cold translucent burial robe

A warrior’s soul wanders through mountains and rivers
Would rather never rest in peace
An attachment grows out from a sore, twisting open blood and flesh, and eventually sliced away
That unnecessary pain deep in the corner of my heart

A sword killing a heart many years ago, sparking off bright fireworks in the dark [2]
It was that moment when a demon was executed with a sword, and crimson blood splattered
I heard a thunder of cheers, a gold mask concealing half of your face
Knowing that this ceremonial god was fake, but their love was real

Faith like incense ash, believers like water tides, incoming winds vanishing in the end
A god’s sculpture holding a flower, fresh flower and dew wither away in the evening sunlight [3]

When to start recounting, the beginning of chaotic times
A city on the borders, a thousand miles, a drop of rain yet to have fallen
Or was it the end of that imperial banquet, its remaining wine poured into a river where lanterns float

Or was it my fault for rashly interfering
Incense igniting flames of war
That youth died in battle, a tiny white flower drifts down from his bosom
Armies of both sides trample past

A thousand people pass through
999 of them leave
Because a breeze has halted that moment for me
To wait again for someone and see

What do I remember from my memories thus far
Sound of rain, aching pain, the icy tip of a sword
A sorrowful cry gripping the throat, and a will-o’-the-wisp burning madly

I may have grown numb to pain
But I will not yield
Will not wear down from setbacks, and will not take the easy way out in life
I don’t believe that people’s hearts are vicious by nature

You ask me here, why
There are 100 peach blossoms by Naihe bridge [4]
While 1000 maple leaves are burning in the mortal world

[1] This white flag specifically refers to the white flag used in battle to signal to the other party that you surrender.

[2] 诛心 usually means to expose and blame someone. It has cruel implications, since you’re like dragging a person down to his/her lowest. But if you translate it word by word, you can also translate it literally as killing the heart – which I think fits better with the lyrics.

[3] 霞光 can refer to either the morning and evening sunlight (when the sun rises or sets). But I went with the latter since it seems to fit better.

[4] Naihe bridge is a bridge every soul has to cross before being reincarnated, they are said to drink the Mengpo soup so they will forget everything in their current lives and prepare for reincarnation. (reference)

Notes: Mandarin is not my most proficient language, so feel free to feedback. Also, I translated according to my own interpretation, and tried to balance between literal and lyrical translations.

Yes the quality is so high, I recommend this to all TGCF fans haha. It took me long to translate the dialogue (especially [06:47] since the dialogue was mixed up), but I’m happy if more people can appreciate it!

Yes, if you credit me and link back to this post, I’m okay with it. 🙂 Thanks for asking!
