《悅神》天官赐福 – English Translation

One of the well-known fansongs for 天官赐福 (Heaven Official’s Blessing), I think. It’s a really nice song, and the video is well-made! The chosen quotes are good too. Mild spoilers.

[00:00]
谢怜: 天官赐福,百无禁忌。
花城: 我喜欢的人,拿我的真心去喂狗也无所谓。

谢怜: May the blessings of Heaven’s Officials be upon you, and all taboos stay away. [1]
花城: It does not matter, if the one I like takes my sincerity to feed the dogs.

[00:40]
一场盛世繁华   若指尖沙   似传说的话
庙堂高墙的画   吹落的刹那
雨中红伞探白花   华服金面高楼下
一念间   桃源已成飞沙

A prosperous and thriving era, like sand slipping through fingers, like a legend
A picture of a temple with high walls, that moment it is blown down
A red umbrella seeks white flowers in the rain, grand robes and gold mask under a tall tower
Within a moment’s thought, paradise has already turned into sand in the wind

[01:04]
上元灯火漫天   千山万水潋滟
白衣翩跹   仗剑执花   天下妄言
从此他这一眼   犹记了千百年
沧海变   桑田间   而今   再相见

Lights fill the sky during lantern festival, thousand mountains and numerous waters rippling [2]
White robes fluttering, holding a sword and a flower, false words in this world
Since this one glimpse of him, still remembering for hundreds of years
The sea changes, into mulberry fields, and today, we meet again [3]

[01:29]
红莲赤焰   莫问   是鬼   还是仙
芳心只一剑   如何能救万千
彼时   金枝玉叶   斜冠散发   问苍天
身在无间   心亦在无间

Red lotus and crimson flames, don’t ask, a demon or a god
Fang Xin is only one sword, how can it save tens of thousands
That moment, the royal with a skewed crown and loose hair, asked Heaven
Body in the abyss, heart also in the abyss

[01:59]
谢怜: 若不知要怎样活下去,那就为了我而活下去吧。
花城: 太子殿下,为你战死,是我至高无上的荣耀。

谢怜: If you don’t know how to live on, then live on for me.
花城: Your Highness the Crown Prince, it is my greatest honour, to die in battle for you.

[02:18]
褪去华服金面   这人间已   换了多少家
红叶吹落轻纱   看落日残霞
雨中红伞探白花   华服金面高楼下
一念间   桃源已成飞沙

Faded grand robes and gold mask, how many families has this mortal world gone through
A blur of red leaves blowing down, seeing the last rays of sunset
A red umbrella seeks white flowers in the rain, grand robes and gold mask under a tall tower
Within a moment’s thought, paradise has already turned into sand in the wind

[02:43]
月夕言笑晏晏   悦神明灯三千
布衣草笠   白绫双枷   天下未言
回首梦已阑珊   众生尽皆漠然
万世千秋不如他   一眼   经年

Soft words and gentle laughter on a moonlit night, a pleased god with three thousand beacons
Cotton robes and straw hat, white silk and double shackles, words not spoken in this world
Looking back the dream has already come to an end, the common people are all indifferent
Thousands of years cannot compare to him, a glimpse, through the years

[03:07]
红莲赤焰   莫问   是鬼   还是仙
芳心只一剑   如何能救万千
彼时   金枝玉叶   斜冠散   问苍天
身在无间   心亦在无间

Red lotus and crimson flames, don’t ask, a demon or a god
Fang Xin is only one sword, how can it save tens of thousands
That moment, the royal with a skewed crown and loose hair, asked Heaven
Body in the abyss, heart also in the abyss

[03:32]
神窟千面   是爱是恨   还是怜
岁岁复年年   谁在耳边轻言
红叶苍山   方见花开满城   一念间
千灯观前   与君话桃源

Thousands of faces in a cave of gods, is it love or hate, or pity
Years over years, who is casually speaking by one’s ear
Red leaves and blue mountains, when flowers bloom to fill a city, within a moment’s thought
In front of Qian Deng Guan, talking about paradise with you

[03:57]
谢怜: 三郎,我其实……没有你想的那么好。
花城: 哥哥,对我来说,风光无限是你,跌落尘埃也是你。重点的是“你”,而不是“怎样”的你。

谢怜: San Lang, actually I’m……not as good as you think I am.
花城: Ge Ge, to me, the you in your brightest glory is you, the you who has fallen from grace is you. What’s important is “you”, and not “how” you are.

[1] So 谢怜 always says this phrase. After searching, I saw that the usual phrase is 姜太公在此,百无禁忌 – Jiang Ziya is here, so all taboos withdraw; all evil spirits keep away; so you can have your own way; there is no need to be superstitious. (reference)

[2] 千山万水 is also an idiom which means a long and arduous journey. I translated it literally as it flows better, but do take it as a metaphor.

[3] When put together, 沧海桑田  is another idiom which means: time brings great changes to the world; anything is possible with time. (reference)

Symbolism: I’ve explained about the symbolism of some items in previous posts. This time, I thought I should talk about the symbolism of maple leaves in China, since it is mentioned a few times in this song. Typically, it is a symbol of love, perseverance,  lingering feelings for first love. Legend has it that if a couple see the maple leaves falling, the two of them will not separate. Also, 枫 (maple) is pronounced “Feng” – 封 also has the same pronunciation, and it means “seal” or “grant”. (reference: one, two)

Notes: I used some of the translations from Sakhyulations so that it will be consistent and less confusing. Mandarin is not my most proficient language, so feel free to feedback. Also, I translated according to my own interpretation, and tried to balance between literal and lyrical translations.

  1. Eu says:

Oooh. Thanks for explaining about the maple leaves! I’ve read a novel before (more like skimmed through it ww) and it felt like there’s so much emphasis on that leaf. So whenever I see it on other series etc, I always thought that it’s only to add a romantic feel to it. Kinda like Endless Love Kdrama feels. www

You’re welcome! That’s true. I always thought of it as a symbol of autumn; feelings dying off or separation oops. So I also learnt another layer of symbolism when looking it up in Chinese this time!
